Hummer/Bird Study Group
Banding Program in Logan Canyon, UT
August 2007

My wonderful friend, DeVonna Bagley, sent me these pictures taken by her son, Kelly, while on an outing to a campground in Logan Canyon, UT. In the campground a couple from an organization called Hummer/Bird Study Group (HBSG) out of Clay, Alabama, were catching hummingbirds and banding them. The wife would catch them in a cage and then drop them in a small mesh bag and attach them to a hanger where the husband would place the tiny, little creatures in a small black satin-looking bag to band them. He would measure, weigh, examine all features, and then document all the information on written records. The HBSG is a non-profit organization founded by Bob and Martha Sargent of Clay, Alabama; dedicated to the study and preservation of hummingbirds and other Neo-tropical migrants (songbirds). The research programs with hummingbirds and migrating songbirds have been under way since 1987.
